Born and raised on a game farm in England, John developed a deep connection to animals and the land from an early age.

Caring for wildlife and observing their natural rhythms shaped his understanding of movement, form, and presence—an understanding that would later manifest in his art.

In his early 20s, he moved to Canada, where his love of nature continued to flourish. Through hiking, camping, and hunting, he spent countless hours tracking and studying animals in their natural environments, honing his ability to capture their mannerisms and essence with an acute and practiced eye.

Later in life, after retiring on the west coast of Canada, his focus shifted to the ocean’s magnificent wildlife. Hunting gave way to fishing, and time spent on the ocean and fishing in remote bays deepened his reverence for the creatures of the sea. These encounters left an indelible mark on his artistic expression.

A lifetime woodworker by trade, John brings decades of craftsmanship to his sculptural practice. Working with found wood, he carefully selects each piece, seeing within it the potential to reveal movement, energy, and life. His sculptures are not merely representations but dynamic expressions—each piece uniquely shaped by both the natural character of the wood and his intimate understanding of the animals he depicts.

Through his work, John honors a lifelong relationship with nature, offering viewers a glimpse into the profound beauty and spirit of the wild.

“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.”
